TDS vs TDSX ?

As part of  Tableau Questions and Answers series, I am asking questions related to Tableau and data warehousing concepts, for this post I am asking about the difference between TDS vs TDSX. I will encourage my students and other readers to explore the answers and reply with comments.

Tableau Question 3.  What is the difference between Tds and Tdsx files in Tableau?

  • .tds:
    tableau data source in .tde extension,it contain file path to connecting to various data sources.
    .tdsx:
    it is combination of (.tde+.tds) tableau data extract and tableau data source.

  • .tds
    Data source files contains the file path that are shortcuts for quickly connecting to data sources that you use often, and its does not contain any data.

    .tdsx
    The .tdsx is a zip file that contains the data source file (.tds), Excel files, Access files, by using this format you can create a single file that you can share with others who may not have access to the original data.

  • .tds and .tdsx are just the datasources.
    For .tds which is Tableau data source file, it only stores file path, it is not containing any data with it.
    But with .tdsx you will get data and you do not need your datasource file.
